“Wow, the bus is so fast!” – This was my son’s reaction when he saw a bus driving like a maniac in SLEX. And, he followed up with a statement: “that’s bad. That’s dangerous. Right, mum?”
We, parents, do our best to show what is right to our children by telling what road courtesy is. But, what happens if they see otherwise? What happens, if they see things like a bus driving recklessly? Or a driver not showing courtesy to a pedestrian?
Consequently, we can alleviate accidents if every DRIVER in the Philippines has discipline.
They say #ItsMoreFunIntThePhilippines, but I am certain it’s not about the maniacal drivers, especially, Jeepneys that load and unload anytime, anywhere or cars that don’t signal at all, switch lanes and treat even the village streets as a racetrack.
Recently, James Deakin, a multi-awarded automotive journalist, proposed a petition on how we can permanently stop these buses from getting away with murder. He came up with something cool that will help our future generation: #yes2speedlimitersph campaign.

While there are rules now about the speed limit, there are still few who ignore this. As a result, the number of reckless driving is increasing.
Furthermore, James also shared on his Facebook page, his disappointment about what happened to the Cano Family (pictured above). Should the bill push through, they will certainly miss the benefits of it. However, they will be rejoicing in heaven along with other victims, as finally, no more lives will be taken.
Honestly, we could prevent car accidents, only if we follow these super simple driving manners:
- Signal when switching or changing lanes (Is it really hard to flick the switch up or down?)
- Know what crosswalk means and Respect the Pedestrian Lanes
- NO to grid locking
- Fix your brake lights (If I get paid for counting vehicles with broken brake lights or no brake lights at all, I’d be rich!)
- Pull to the side if you need to answer a call or text someone.
- Learn when to let cars merge
- Be mindful of your speed limit.
James shared on his article that “Senator JV Ejercito filed Senate bill 2110 last Feb 10 to mandate the use of speed limiters on all buses, trucks and PUVs.”
Truthfully, thousands of writers, journalists, bloggers, have already written a gazillion articles about road courtesy. But, none of them are being taken seriously. None.
So, if you want to make a difference, for you, our children, our country, sign the petition. The petition currently sits at 18,757 signatures but we NEED more!
