Award-winning Broadway actress Lea Salonga recently received backlash from Filipino netizens due to her “kababawan” [Translation: shallowness] tweet as fans linked the said post to Eat Bulaga’s popular split-screen love team AlDub. The tweet said: “Okay lang sa akin ang kababawan, pero hanggang doon na lamang ba tayo? #NagtatanongLangPo” [Translation: “I don’t mind shallowness, but is that all we’re ever going to be? #JustAsking”]
Comedian Joey de Leon even indirectly countered on Twitter: “O, para matapos na itong mga pagtatalo. Mabuti na ang MABABAW kaysa MABABA! Ayos?” [Translation: “To end this: it’s better to be shallow than low. How does that sound?”]
The actress, however, immediately made it clear that her post was not about the pair, saying: “Uhmmm… I have no idea what’s going on. Why did people assume I was tweeting about AlDub? I wasn’t. I don’t know about it. So why the hate?”
The Eat Bulaga host then posted on Twitter: “Hindi naman pala daw AlDub pinatatamaan ni Lea,” [Translation: “Apparently, Lea wasn’t talking about AlDub.”], to which the The Voice of the Philippines host responded: “Hi, Tito Joey, I’ll take this to mean that you’re at least giving me the benefit of the doubt. For that, thank you very much.”
After the clarification, Joey replied: “Hi Lea, no worries. Wala na ‘yon! Magsimula na lang tayong lahat ng A WHOLE NEW WORLD! Mabuhay ka!” [Translation: “It’s over now. Let’s start a whole new world.”], thus ending their Twitter exchange.
