Jade had been diagnosed with Scalp Cylindroma, better known as the “Turban Tumor”.
Growing up had not been easy for “Jade” (not her real name). At 18 years of age, she admits that her appearance had been an easy prey for bullies.
Jade is diagnosed with an exceedingly rare condition called scalp cylindroma which is also known as the “turban tumor”. Getting treatment was far beyond the financial limitations of Jade’s family, but this young and fearless girl from Bohol never lost hope of living a normal life.
On December 2014, Jade was seeking help during a medical mission that was initiated by the Tzu Chi Foundation. Upon examination, she was quickly referred by Jenemy Abus to Tzu Chi’s board of director, Dr. Robert C. Sy who was kind enough to offer his services for free.
Dr. Robert Sy (right) played the role of the “good samaritan” by offering to give Jade (left) his services for free.
For over 40 years, Dr. Sy has been widely known to be giving his services for free and had scheduled Jade’s surgery at the Chinese General Hospital just this November 7, 2014. “This is a very rare case. Although the tumor is benign, the procedure will be very bloody and might not be done in just one session,” explained Dr. Sy.
Dr. Sy was joined by Dr. Elma Monsanto (Dermatologist), Dr. Ramon Lao, Dr. Larry King, Dr. Kristine Mae Lootian, and Dr. Sherrie Ann Liquete-Depano (Anaesthesiologist) during the surgical procedure.
Jade was once asked before going through the operation on what is going on in her mind and her response amazed everyone.
“Hindi po ako natatakot. Kasi alam ko na kasama ko po ang Panginoon. Nagpapasalamat ako at may mga tumulong sa akin.” [Rough translation: I am not scared because I know that God is with me. I am grateful that there are people who helped me.”]

After 4 hours in the surgery room, the operation was finally declared successful. Jade is already excited go back to school and start a new chapter in her life. She promises that she will also be dedicating her life in helping other people who are struggling with rare conditions.
Jade underwent surgery on November 7, 2015 at the Chinese General Hospital. The procedure was held from 9am-1pm.
“Gusto ko din pong makatulong sa iba o maibahagi ang naranasan ko. Ipapakita ko rin sa kanila kung gaano kabait ang Panginoon.” [Rough translation: I want to be able to help others or share my experience. I will show them how nice God is.”]
