No, thank you for your comfy office chair

$

I have a moody schedule. I can be an extremely morning person, creating viral content at 4.30am before everyone else has peeked at their smartphone with one eye closed. The following day, I can be a night owl, starting to churn out ideas at 12 midnight until wee hours in the morning. But if you force me to sit my butt on your office chair at 9 am every single day then that is counterproductive, no matter how comfortable and ergonomically-designed that office chair is. You are wasting my time and yours. I think most creatives are like that. I need an inspiration, a trigger, to really get going. If you force your preferred hours on me, we both lose because you get less output from me.

I used to work in corporate that has this vicious cycle, which was massively detrimental to my mental health. I repeatedly asked if I can work remotely and the answer they gave me was “we don’t do things that way” every single time. “Hey, you have the power, why don’t you implement changes for the better?” That follow up was replied with silence. Their response didn’t make a lot of sense to me but I’m just an employee so either “you suck it up or leave.” I chose the latter. I’m done trying to work a 9-6 shift. I make more mistakes when I force myself to do so. I only stick to work arrangements where I have the freedom with my work hours. I’m not a bum though and I don’t slack off. I actually slacked off more when I was forced to come in the office. I don’t think I’m alone on this one but even if I am, I’d admit I probably chatted with my officemates half the time I was in the office. Now, I just prefer to work at the time of my peak productivity. That’s the smarter choice.

Most may disagree because they’d say they don’t have a choice, they have mouths to feed. It’s a cliche but you always have a choice. This is also for the employers out there. If you can’t trust your team to do work remotely, maybe you should rethink why you hired them. If you can’t trust them, maybe they are not the right people for the job. You should build a team you can trust instead of having one that you can micromanage.

Overall, I take pride in the work I do. I may not be the greatest but I know that I will never have a shot at greatness in a confined setup. I love to create meaningful content that provides value and I love doing it with like-minded people, a team that aims for greatness and who really care about the things they are working on despite the lack of rules and processes. In order to do this, I have to not be sitting in that comfy chair at 9 am. I need to break down all the office walls, bring myself to where I’m inspired, and work my ass off to finish content that matters whether at 4.30 am or 12 midnight.

The Wait is Over! Famous Korean Coffee Shop Finally Opens in Pasig

With roots originating from Korea, Tom N Toms has gained a large number of loyal followers from all over the world and is continuously growing in fame for their freshly-made pretzels and pastries and their freshly-brewed coffee. After the success of their branches in Bacolod, Dumaguete, and Boracay, they recently opened a branch in Pasig, too! You asked for it and they delivered!

Here are 3 reasons why you should check it out!

3. Variety

With the sheer amount of choices on their menu, you are sure to find something that will pique your interest. Complete with the tea and coffee classics (Caramel, Mocha, Java Chip, and more), Tom N Toms does not shy away from quirky combinations (Green Mint Mocha, Cinnamon Choco, Coconut Milk, etc.). They also offer smoothies for those who want to take the healthier route, with interesting flavors (Citron, Banana Revolution, etc.).

Their pastry-making is a highlight in itself as they stray away from the usual set-up of most other coffee shops. They make everything from scratch as you order–without a separate kitchen! Everything is done right in front of you–from stretching the dough, to generously filling it with toppings, you can see the start to end process. Their snacks include pretzels and pastries of varying flavors to match your craving.

For a classic drink, I tried the Caramel Tomnccino. With just the right balance between the sweetness of the caramel and the bitterness of the coffee, I was pleasantly taken by surprise. It also had this delightfully light whipped cream, completing it.

Caramel Tomnccino grande (Php 160)

For a picture-perfect drink, I tried the Affogato–a kind that I have not seen in other coffee shops. The sweetness and creaminess of the vanilla ice cream perfectly complimented the warm, strong coffee poured over it. Apart from the delectable concoction that was formed, I appreciated the fact that there was an interaction between the customer and the drink through the pouring of the coffee. There is an undeniable satisfaction in seeing a drink transform right in front of you, done with your own hands.

Affogato (Php 160)

For a barista’s hot drink recommendation, I was given the Oriental Latte. Upon lifting the lid, I was met with a rich aroma from the freshly brewed coffee. With a sip, the creamy foam introduced me to the coffee’s balance of bitterness and sweetness. The sensation of the warm coffee trickling down my throat warmed me to my core amidst the rainy weather.

Sick and tired of the usual cookies in your nearest coffee shop? Tom N Toms made sure to keep you interested not only in their drinks but also in their snacks. Whether it be savory, sweet, spicy, or what have you, Tom N Toms has it all! Some of their interesting combinations include shrimp pretzel, kimchi pretzel, and bacon potato tortilla pizza.

Hot Italiano Beef Pretzel (Php 185) and Oriental Latte smallest size (Php 150)

The Cinnamon Sugar and Cream Cheese Special Pretzels were nice and crispy on the outside, but is deceivingly fluffy on the inside. The Hot Italiano Beef Pretzel was similar in that regard, but its flavors were completely different with flavorful chunks of beef, hot slices of jalapeño, and a cheese pull to die for.

2. Facilities

One of the beauties of Tom N Toms is that it creates a homey-vibe. From the wooden tables to the mesmerizing walls and relaxing lights, it is not a surprise that people from all over the world are abuzz about it. Not to mention the freedom that customers are given with the flexible facilities found inside.

Tom N Toms is complete with air-conditioning, comfortable chairs, sturdy tables, and several sockets on the walls both on the first and second floor. Around August, Tom N Toms will be open 24 hours with free WIFI! There is also a separate room on the 2nd Floor with a 10-person capacity that can be rented out for 3 hours with a minimum consumable fee of Php2000.

Apart from the excellent food and service, sinking into the comfortable leather seats and being able to fully charge my device was also a treat. I had a comfortable stay all throughout without a single complaint.

Room available for rent 3hrs for minimum of Php2000 purchase

3. Versatility

With its good food and ambiance, Tom N Toms is suitable for dates, study sessions, or even meetings. For pulling all-nighters, 24-hour access with free WIFI is provided. For more formal meetings, a private room can be rented out. Tom N Toms is a place where anyone can go to and have a place to belong in. Being strategically located at the heart of Pasig, it is a second home, accessible to everyone.

2nd Floor

Stretching its wings far from its homeland, Tom N Toms shares its versatility, comfort, and decadent food and drinks to Filipinos, one branch at a time.

READ: Beauty Vlogger Michelle Dy’s Apology to Jeffree Star

$

The past week was full of drama in the vlogging world. In case you missed it, American beauty vlogger Jeffree Star publicly called out our very own beauty vlogger Michelle Dy because of what seems like a massive misunderstanding.

Last week, Jeffree posted several Instagram stories wherein he rants about a vlogger “who is not known in America” for basically “stealing his copyrighted Approved series”. He does not name Michelle in it “to avoid giving more attention to her”, but a screenshot of her YouTube video shows a comment from Jeffree that shows just how angry he is about it.

“You’re full of complete s… Stealing my “Approved” series and trademarked title is pathetic… but that’s what boring unoriginal people do. My lawyer will reach out to you shortly. ‘Jeffree Star Approved’ is copyrighted in America,” he wrote in the comment.

Despite the fact that Michelle admits her series was inspired by him and despite the many people who are saying that ‘Approved’ is a term used by a lot of people the world over, Michelle has issued a public apology on her social media accounts addressing the issue.

“Jeffree Star is one of the few YouTube gurus I watch and look up to in the YouTube community,” she wrote. “Recently, I uploaded 2 new videos in my YouTube channel, which was the ‘MD Approved New Series’ inspired by Jeffree, while it was clearly stated in the description box in the 2 videos that these new series in my channel were Pinay version and inspired by international YouTubers, I was unaware that this ‘Jeffree Star Approved’ series is copyrighted in America.”

She continues, “I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize to Jeffree Star if in any way or another, I may have violated your rights from the use of your trademark. Videos from my channel have already been deleted and rest assured that it will not happen again. Again, I am sorry.”

Michelle continues to explain her public apology: “I am sharing this to all of you to serve as a lesson for all of us. I believe that a mistake cannot be corrected with another mistake. And as the adage goes, ‘When you make a mistake, there are only three things to do about it: admit it, learn from it, and don’t repeat it.”

LeBron James Offers Free Tuition and Much More at His ‘I Promise School’

LeBron James just did something amazing that isn’t basketball-related: he opened an ‘I Promise School’ that basically makes me wish he would run for President.

Kidding aside (okay, just half-kidding…), LeBron just opened an ‘I Promise School’ in his hometown in Ohio last Monday to serve the low-income and at-risk students in the area. The ‘I Promise School’ started as a non-profit aimed at boosting the achievements of younger students with disadvantaged backgrounds; but now, it can actually educate them all year round.

The impact of @KingJames’ school will go far beyond the classroom

Free tuition aside, the ‘I Promise School’ also provides free uniforms; free bicycles and helmets; free transportation within two miles; free breakfast, lunch, and snacks; a food pantry for families; GEDs and job placement services for parents; and guaranteed tuition to the University of Akron for every student who graduates.

“We’re going to be on ’em like a school should be because we want them to be successful not only in the school, but successful in life,” says Lebron.

The kindness of others is contagious!

As a daily commuter, you experience the hardships of waiting under the hot (or rainy!) weather, hopping from one PUV to another, the flux of fellow passengers who want to get to their destinations, among others.

Claude Homer Fong shared on his Twitter account how the deed of this FX warmed his heart. He was on his way to Veteran Memorial Medical Center where he is currently doing his post-grad internship. He shares to WHEN IN MANILA that this was taken on a stormy day, around the time classes were called off.

Always choose to be kind! You never know how a heart full of gold can touch others, too! Have a great day, everyone!

This young boy is about to break more records! 10-year-old Clark Kent Apuada is making waves as a swimmer – he beat the records of world-renowned Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps.

Even the swimming superstar himself has recognized his prowess.

Here’s what we know so far about the little Superman.

Clark Kent is a Filipino born and raised in the US

A post revealed by Team Philippines on Facebook that the 10-year-old was born to Filipino parents but was raised in the United States. He swims for the Montery County Aquatic Team, located at Salinas, California.

He is also a kuya to two younger brothers.

He has big dreams outside of the swimming world.

In an interview with CBS news, Apuada’s swim coach Travis Rianda reveals that his student’s first goals included “becoming a scientist, Olympic gold medalist for the United States and a black belter.”

“He’s on track for all three of those,” he said.

Other than that, his dad Chris tells CNN that the 10-year-old also does piano lessons, martial arts and is participative in computer classes, coding or STEM programs.

What a driven kid!

He was named “Clark Kent” because his dad’s favorite superhero is Superman

We all know that behind the mask, DC Comics’ Superman is known as Clark Kent. In an interview with Huffington Post, Clark’s mom Cynthia shares that she was always fond of the name Clark and her husband’s favorite superhero is Superman.

“We’re always just telling people his name is Clark. But when they realize his full name, people just call him Superman,” Apuada said.

Like Phelps, Apuada set a world record at 10 years old.

Phelps was 10 years old when he participated at the Far Western Swimming Championship in 1995 where he made a world record of swimming the 100-meter butterfly at 1:10:48, also under the category of Apuada. Apuada broke the record just recently at 1:09:38, the NY Post writes.

“That was one of my dreams — to beat Michael Phelps’s record — since I was 7,” Apuada tells The Washington Post.

He learned how to swim at three years old!

The Straits Times reports that he learned how to swim at three years old but only began competitive swimming at seven years old.

His heart and mind are set to compete at the Olympics.

“Paris 2024 or Los Angeles 2028,” he tells The Huffington Post. “This record has motivated me to keep swimming, to keep striving and do everything I can to get to that elite level. Never give up on your dreams. Never.”

Artist shares touching encounter with Angel Cacnio, the man behind the designs of ₱20 &₱100 banknotes

How wonderful is it to encounter an individual who became a part of national history?

Artist Sofia Cope had the most wonderful opportunity to meet Mr. Angel Cacnio, a Filipino artist known for designing the Php 20 and Php 100 banknotes. His other famous work includes the “Reporma”. She shared her encounter with him on a Facebook post. The Malabon native is now 87 years old.

“I don’t think I have ever truly known the look of happiness after seeing it on his face that day,” she writes.

The Inquirer reports that he drew the Php 20 and Php 100 bill with the faces of Presidents Manuel Quezon and Manuel Roxas respectively, “on a commission by the then Central Bank of the Philippines in the 1980’s”.

“My friend Clarisse and I have this thing where we visit artists in their abode,” Cope tells WHEN IN MANILA. “Last June, we went to Ms.Patis Tesoro’s beautiful home — she is also Clarisse’s friend. I’d document these trips via IG Stories.”

In the first video,  Cacnio draws a sketch for Cope as a token of visiting him at his humble abode. She said the man was almost in tears of joy.

The second video shows framed versions of the Php 20 and Php 100 paper bills. The first drafts of the bills were seen, as well as the final outcome of the banknotes.

Cope also shared Cacnio’s “Reporma”, an oil in canvas masterpiece completed in 1971. She says that if she stared at it long enough, she could almost hear the screams of the people in the painting, thus giving her goosebumps.

Cacnio could not contain his happiness when Clarisse, who went with Cope to visit the artist, gifted him an easel.

“I love capturing the artists in their most raw moments. My viewers, albeit few, always love it and share it with their friends — they didn’t even know these artists exist,” Cope happily tells WHEN IN MANILA “And that’s important for the preservation of culture, for the younger generation’s awareness. Other than that, I believe art and stories are empathy machines.”

FULL STORY: This lady saved travel time by taking a short ₱5 ferry ride!

Traffic blues, traffic woes. It can get awfully overwhelming. There are some instances when I leave the house 3 hours before my appointment yet I still arrive late. It’s absolutely frustrating. For some commuters,  not only does the travel get tiring but also the amount of time you spend lining up for a PUV, hailing a taxi and sometimes even walking.

Ria Flora shared on her Twitter account how she was able to save herself from the exhausting road traffic by taking the ferry.

She shares to WHEN IN MANILA her bangka commuting experience. It was out of desperation because she was already going to be late for work, even if the destination wasn’t so far.

I had to go to a training today at Ortigas as part of my job. It’s beside Rob Galleria. The call time was 9 AM and it usually takes me approximately 15 mins from my area to there (Guadalupe). But as I heard in the news and when I checked Waze, EDSA wasn’t moving because of the local storm surge we had earlier today. I tried booking a taxi and even tried all available services (tax, share, car, premium, 6 seater) but there was no available car. This was part of my job so I really didn’t have the option to skip the day.

I lived near the Pasig river, and I know for a fact that there are bangkas for traveling. This was the first time I tried it – I had no choice already. The traffic along JP Rizal extension wasn’t moving, EDSA wasn’t moving – so had no idea which way to go.

The bangka commute took only, surprise – less than a minute! And the fare price? FIVE PESOS!

From the stop near Guadalupe bliss, it crossed the river and dropped us off at Brgy Buayang Bato. From there at the “dock”, someone collected the fare which surprised me – because it was just ₱5.

There were around 10 of us (passengers) and all of them seemed like they were working in nearby plants or business districts. There was even a guy all suited up! Then from the dock, we walked for about a minute or two, there was a tricycle terminal nearby. Because there was no tricycle, I walked until Cityland Pioneer. I was familiar with the area because I studied in St Paul College Pasig for elementary and high school, so even if I lived in Makati, that was the route of my school service before.

I stopped walking at Cityland Pioneer hoping to book or hail a taxi, but wala pa rin. Everyone seemed stranded also since no tricycle stopped nearby, plus, there were no jeeps in the area too. I even tried booking through a motorcycling app, but I had no luck.

There was a good samaritan that offered Flora to hop on, or ‘habal’. Out of desperation to get to work on time, Flora agreed. Thankfully, the motorcyclist had an extra helmet and was very careful. It took her around 10 minutes to go from Cityland Pioneer to the office that she was going to for training.

The [ride] cost me ₱100, so there. I came in right on time. To my surprise, more than half of the trainees were late because of the traffic, but I was just glad I reached the area on time. The punctual student in me was quite happy I made it.

Flora discloses that the ferry she hopped on was the Pasig River Ferry. “That was a project of the MMDA but they closed it down because there weren’t enough passengers. Too bad it got me to Binondo from Guadalupe at around 45 minutes without any hassle,” she tells WHEN IN MANILA.

“Also, whoever manages that ferry system changed the ferries to open-air ones. Being a resident of the area, Iknow for a fact that option isn’t exactly okay for people since there’s a stench when it’s hot.”

Flora feels hopeful and optimistic about the ferry system.

I really hope they develop the river ferry system again – have more stops leading to nearby business districts like Rockwell, Ayala (near Makati city hall), and Pioneer,” she closes.

LOL, what a way to start the morning, right? What would you do if you saw this before you jumpstart a productive day?

A Twitter user shared how he got an early morning surprise when he came to work.

He shares to WHEN IN MANILA further details.

I got to work early and I was the only one here in the lab. I pass by that section to get to mine. When I turned, I got shocked because there’s a photo of this spooky lady right there.

There’s actually a second scary pic inside the laboratory but I didn’t take photo anymore since it was INSIDE the lab, HAHAHA! But it was wearing a lab gown too, so at first glance, I thought it was a ghost.

He tells WHEN IN MANILA that this is why fun is being shared amongst his colleagues in the lab.

“Ganito talaga magbiruan mga tao dito,” he laughs.

COOL: This incoming college student tried to visualize a ‘Beep’ app, and it’s AMAZING!

What a more convenient way it could be if our public transportation had an app for us to navigate and work around with, don’t you think?

Today’s generation heavily relies on technology – and for this fresh senior high school grad from San Beda University, she tried visualizing the interfaces of a Beep app!

Bianca Moreno tells WHEN IN MANILA that the class was tasked to create a mobile application for their thesis.

Related post: This UP Student visualized how it would be like to have a student portal app

Since all of us were train riders, we thought of innovating something that would add convenience towards us LRT & MRT passengers. This proposed Beep mobile application includes features such as: using your phone for tapping, more options for balance inquiries, real-time tracking for schedules, a fare guide, famous landmarks for each station, and so much more! We really hope something like this would be created soon, and if not, maybe in a couple years we ourselves will.

Moreno thinks that the mobile app could greatly help the country’s public transportation system.

Since we are in a tech-savvy era, this would be a great help knowing that majority of the train passengers are smartphone users. Technology has really helped us with convenience nowadays, integrating it with our shaky transportation system would cause a better experience for us commuters.

Check out photos of the visualized interface below!

Conspiracy theory: All of The Rock’s movies are interconnected… here’s a timeline!

$

0

Story time: I was lounged back in my seat, all cozy, while watching some movie trailers one after another. During one movie trailer, I saw Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a dirty shirt, sweating, standing in front of a background filled with utter disrepair. Thought to myself: Yeah, seems about right.

Notification break. I look down at my phone, tell some friends I’m about to see a movie so I’m going to be offline for a bit, and respond to a particularly lengthy message. All in all, takes me about 3 minutes or so. That number is important. When I’m done, I look up at the screen again. Still The Rock in a dirty shirt, disrepair in the background. Cue me going: “Huh?” Because it’s pretty darn lengthy for one movie trailer. Most of those last just under 2 and 1/2.

Turns out it was a trailer for a completely different movie. But it didn’t seem to register. The general aesthetic was the same. It was still The Rock on my screen, dirt-stained neutral-colored shirt and everything. And that got me conspiring right there in the middle of a movie theater: All of his recent movies must be contained in one huge universe.

I will accept nothing less. The overall aesthetics, the outfits, the fact that he plays the same beefcake in them all. It’s got to be the same. Let me explain.

It begins with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

So those who have seen the film know that he isn’t the actual main character, just the avatar of the kid who’s playing the game. But this is his first iteration in this form and my entire theory banks on the idea that, when Spencer and his friends actually win the game, these avatars get left behind.

This avatar is what lives on to connect these 4 movies.

Before I get ahead of myself, this is what happens in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle for those unfamiliar: A kid opens up an old board game called Jumanji that sucks him into the world. Same premise as the original. Years later, another group of kids finds it, too, but ignore it. What sets this apart from the original is that the game adapts. It turns into a video game and brings those kids in and challenges them to complete it.

The heart of the story remains: This game is out to get them. Out to get someone, anyone. And it traps them there until they finish their challenges. Which is why when the iconic drum beats sound, you know it means trouble. And, after all of the events of the movie, you hear the drums again. Trouble is brewing another time!

While the movie ends there, The Rock, now in that jungle stuck as an avatar, lingers there. We establish that The Rock is “big” here. He’s a large man, physically strong. Which is what made me connect Jumanji to RampageRampage’s tagline is “big meets bigger” and I thought: “Hey, that’s smart–it’s also a pretty clever subtle sequel title if we wanted to read it that way!”

Rampage looks a little similar because, surprise, it’s all the same darn universe (I’m adamant). After the players log out, the Rock avatar lingers to see the jungle become a wildlife reserve. He isn’t erased. He lives in that universe. The events of Jumanji have shaken him so he tries to dedicate his life to caring for the Earth around him this time.

Life is good to him and he’s just gotten along with George the gorilla when the pathogen that sets up the entire film hits. Chaos ensues, of course, and our friend Dwayne has to pull himself by the roots from that wildlife reserve that holds his first life and his first iteration and go to the city to stop the mutated animals.

Once he stops them and masters flying a helicopter, he moves away from the reserve, trying to stay away from the negativity of that island/wildlife reserve and dedicate his life to trying to protect cities from any other insane, enlarged animal attacks.

This brings us to San Andreas. After the fancy helicopter work he did in the previous film, he is now a seasoned pilot. He dedicates his life to justice and helping people out. And, though things seem to be going alright again, the Jumanji game rears its ugly head once more.

This time, it triggers a huge earthquake, ripping the city apart. The Rock is once more dodging debris and squaring off with something much bigger than he is (which is quite the feat). When the tsunami hits, he’s devastated but tries his best to save his family anyway (one he had within the universe).

When the action dies down and he saves the day again, he notices how flooded everything is and how submerged most of the architecture is now that the flood rolled in. With this, he now has a new life direction, bringing us to…

Skyscraper. The Rock has once more tried to rebuild his life and pursue another passion. After the big flood, he decided that they should all start building up instead. It’d help out a lot more if the events of San Andreas were to repeat themselves. His new life is now into skyscraper security and he tries to ensure things go smoothly.

However, of course, things go wrong. Cue The Rock running slow-mo while being chased by bad guys. Something we’re super used to by now. The Jumanji game has not let up at all and has cornered this poor man another time with building floors catching fire and him having to jump incredible lengths.

As usual, he finds a way to prevail. He, again, beats the game (something I imagine happens offscreen along with the drumbeat that signals things are about to look bad again). He is a seasoned veteran of the game’s tricks and turns but we know that, soon, he will fall victim again…

You can’t change my mind about this (insert “change my mind” meme guy here).

Do you believe that his movies are all interconnected? Wanna join in on the conspiracy? Let me know!

LOL: This man pranked his GF by surprising her tokneneng instead of munchkins!

Don’t you hate it when you open the fridge, you see a container of ice cream, only to find out it’s fish instead? Nick Laurence Abala‘s girlfriend had the same expectations when the former surprised her with supposedly her favorite munchkins, but instead had tokneneng disguised inside a paper bag of a famous donut restaurant! The latter was excited to devour the munchkins but was surprised to see something else!

Tokneneng is a common Filipino street food; quite similar to kwek kwek. Tokneneng is a hard chicken egg that is deep-fried; coated in orange batter. It is commonly served with sweet and sour sauce.

Agabe shares to WHEN IN MANILA the full story behind the prank.

Rough translation:

“[My girlfriend]’s favorite is the choco butternut munchkin, so I bought her that. But I asked for a separate paper bag so that I can buy and place tokneneng in one of the bags. At first, I gave her the bag that had the tokneneng inside to excite her. But to her surprise, it was tokneneng instead of the munchkins – she told me I kept her hopes up! When she started eating the tokneneng, that’s when I gave her the paper bag that had the real choco butternut munchkins inside.
