We asked people what new things they would try in 2019 and their answers will motivate you

The start of the new year is the best time to be brave. You can finally put your regrets and mistakes behind you, and look forward to all that’s coming. I think we all have a tendency to be dire and defeatist for most of the year, so we deserve to be unabashedly optimistic for at least the first few weeks of each new year.

Part of that is being unapologetically excited for life. It means having goals and dreams for the 365 days that are stretching ahead of you. Seeing people bursting to the brim with ideas and plans is honestly so refreshing. So, we decided to ask the WIM Squad on Facebook about what new thing they were going to do this year!

(Also Read: Here are 10 of the most cliche resolutions and why we have to keep on making them)

12. “Well for 2019, as generic as this sounds, I just really wanna step out of my comfort zone. As an introvert, that means socializing.”

11. “Spoken word poetry!”

-Raffy

10. “Wear a Spider-Man suit to a full day of classes.”

-Bry

9. “Make it to the finals series of a national competition.”

8. “See my friends more often. I’m a homebody and always end up canceling plans (even when I’m not busy).”

7. “Wear more red lipstick!”

-Soph

6. “Reading books are at the top of the list. I figured I’d do something different with my free time aside from gaming and binge-watching YouTube videos.”

5. “Get out of my house more and try things like a firing rage, or going to museums and on road trips.”

-Dan

4. “I’m going to try out hiking. I already have a trail in mind: Mt Daguldol.”

-Dante

3. “Getting into the Dean’s List. I never really had good study habits in high school and I was always used to slacking off but getting satisfactory results, so I want to try raising the bar for myself this year.”

-Bel

2. “Up my fashion game. I wanna be able to learn how to match stuff and be more creative and try risks. Definitely get a new hairstyle and try to get rid of my eye bags!”

-Vince

1. “Take it slow in a relationship. I think I should be more cautious of the people I let into my life. I usually am very lenient towards other people, but it’s time for me to prioritize my own preferences — self-love if you will.”

-PJ

Joining them are Robert Glasper, Danny Krivit, Ruby Ibarra, Laneous and some of the newest local acts on the local scene, mixed in with some classic OPM. 3 time Grammy Award winning Robert Glasper will be featuring Derrick Hodge and Justin Tyson. If you loved the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie Aquaman, we have great news: the movie is now officially the highest-grossing DC movie overseas!

The film has made $681 million (roughly P35.6 billion) internationally, bringing its total earnings to $940.7 million (roughly P49.2 billion). It beats the previous record for the highest international earnings, 2016’s The Dark Knight Rises‘ $636.8 million (roughly P33.3 billion).

Critics have also praised Aquaman, with Rotten Tomatoes claiming that it “swims with its entertainingly ludicrous tide, offering up CGI superhero spectacle that delivers energetic action with an emphasis on good old-fashioned fun.”

The film follows the origin story of the titular character as he becomes entangled in a war between the surface world and the Atlanteans below the sea who want to revolt.

It stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman and he is joined by Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, and Willem Dafoe. It is directed by James Wan.

This year is a wonderful time for representation in Hollywood. At the recently concluded Golden Globes, many people of color were nominated for and won top awards (hello, Black Panther, Crazy Rich Asians, and Sandra Oh). For Filipinos, the most special was Darren Criss, who won the Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

In his acceptance speech, he acknowledges his Filipino roots and even gave out a shoutout to his Cebuana mother. He said, “As we’ve seen it’s been a marvelous year for representation in Hollywood, and I am so enormously proud to be a teeny, tiny part of that as the son of a firecracker Filipino woman from Cebu that dreamed of coming to this country and getting to be invited to cool parties like this. Mom, I know you’re watching this, you are hugely responsible for most of the good things in my life. I love you dearly and I dedicate this to you.”

Watch his speech below:

Criss is also the first Filipino-American to win a Golden Globe.

Backstage, he continued gushing about his home country. He said, “I’ve said this before, but being half Filipino is one of my favorite things about me. I feel like I have been given a superhero cape and I am glad to step up to that plate. It’s a great privilege — and I am proud to be part of that.”

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is a miniseries that followed the murder of Gianni Versace by Andrew Cunanan, also a Filipino-American. Criss plays the role of Cunanan.

LOL, Netflix just warned everyone not to do the “Bird Box” challenge

Whether or not you’ve seen the Netflix film Bird Box, you know what it’s about because of the countless memes that showed up all over social media. And in case you’re not aware, the film follows Sandra Bullock and two children as they navigate their way blindfolded towards a safehouse in the midst of a supernatural creature that attacks when it is seen.

The internet being as mysterious as the creature in the film, countless memes have sprouted online, many of them funny. It also sparked a challenge but Netflix is not having any of it.

Basically, the challenge, um, challenges people to do ordinary things blindfolded. The potential for danger is high, which forced Netflix to tweet, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”

In another, possibly unrelated tweet, the platform tweeted a photo of Girl, with another photo of Whoopi Goldberg as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost, where she uttered the iconic line: you in danger, girl.

Here’s What Your Love Life Has in Store for You this 2019, According to Your Horoscope

It’s the start of another year once again, and as with all beginnings, comes this inkling of hope and positivity that things could even be better than they were in the year that has passed. Or one could pray, at least. That’s the wonderful thing about new years. Like every year we get a chance to hit the “reset” button and start again.

Then again, there are things in life that are simply beyond our control, like love. But as much as we can’t control it, we can, however, look to the stars for guidance. If you’ve exhausted all efforts to get ~crushy~ to notice you and still to no avail, here is a peek at your love horoscope for 2019, as written by author and professional astrologer Maria DeSimone on Tarot.com, so you can navigate your love life this year with a little more confidence and hopefully more luck.

love horoscope

Will you finally find love this year? Find out below:

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)

“You’ve got quite a year ahead when it comes to relationship happenings, Capricorn. Saturn will continue to tour your sign all year along with Pluto, helping to remind you that sometimes the only way to a breakthrough in life is through a breakdown. When it comes to matters of the heart, you’re ready to collapse any patterns that are no longer working — especially the ones you’ve been telling yourself you need.

You’re all about foundations, so when it comes to love, you want something solid. You know that anything worthwhile takes time to build from the ground up and you certainly don’t mind putting in the work. In fact, you prefer it that way because this is how you appreciate love and know that it’s real.

But sometimes in life, we get stuck. We keep working and building and think we’re going to end up with a castle. What we wind up with instead resembles a leaning tower of Pisa. Apply this analogy to your relationship scenario in 2019. It will be up to you to determine if the leaning tower of Pisa you and your partner have created is a work of art or a total mistake.”

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

“The key difference for you in matters of the heart in 2019, Aquarius, is that, whether you’re single or attached, for the first time in a long time you’re genuinely interested in connecting with a partner. This is huge for you because your typical path is to remain detached and more of a citizen of the world than a partner in relationship. It was the eclipses in 2018 that dramatically shifted your perspective, along with a testy Mars Retrograde in cycle in your sign last summer. The eclipses fell across your partnership axis (your sign and your opposite sign Leo), forcing you to adjust the lens from which you viewed your personal identity and your place in relationships. Mars Retrograde had you recalibrate your goals in relationship.

As the new year begins, you will notice that all of the events transpiring for you last year are truly bearing fruit now. You’ll have one more eclipse in your partnership sector on January 21. This is a Lunar Eclipse and highlights a significant emotional turning point for you. You are emotionally invested in someone and you’re no longer afraid to show it. Or, for some, you realize that an emotional connection is not a fit and it’s time to release. Lunar Eclipses are like this — it is either an ending or an illumination. Much depends on what else is already happening in your personal love life story. The point, however, is transition. That’s how you’ll start the year in matters of the heart.”

Read the rest of Aquarius’ 2019 love horoscope by Maria DeSimone here.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20)

“Pisces, you begin 2019 feeling inspired about your life and all its possibilities. Professionally, you’re on a high and that should continue through the year. Indeed, you will have many opportunities to climb the ladder of career success since Jupiter will move through your professional 10th house until December 2. But with all of this work-related energy happening, will you have time for love? Absolutely!

In fact, your social and romantic connections are a significant theme for 2019 thanks to the eclipses flanking this axis of your chart. The most noteworthy romantic event happens on July 2 when a Solar Eclipse lands in your 5th House of Romance, Pleasure, and Children. If you’re single, this eclipse can change everything. You could meet the love of your life and start a brand-new, emotionally rich adventure with this person. Venus will also move through your true love sector from July 3-July 27, making this the absolute best (and most supportive) time of the year for you to fall in love with someone who makes you feel every feeling there is!”

Read the rest of Pisces’ 2019 love horoscope by Maria DeSimone here.

Aries (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19)

“Love? Who has time for that nonsense? Oh, Aries, in 2019 you might have this attitude, so be aware. It’s not that you’ll have any shortage of romantic opportunities — no, that’s not it at all. It’s just that for the most part, 2019 is shaping into such a banner career year for you that you might choose to put your heart on the shelf and focus on your climb up the ladder of success instead.

As a result, if you’re completely single, you might easily miss out on the opportunities for romance. Or, you might have the opportunity but lack the motivation to follow through because of all those late nights at the office. Even so, a Lunar Eclipse in your 5th House of Pleasure on January 21 will leave you with a turning-point situation in matters of the heart. For some, this is about releasing a love that has not served you well, but for others it’s about releasing whatever is getting in the way of you finding that love. The bottom line is that if you want love in 2019, it is available. You have to want it though, and you have to make time for it.”

Read the rest of Aries’ 2019 love horoscope by Maria DeSimone here.

Taurus (Apr. 20 – May 20)

“In 2018 your sign enjoyed the best possible support for love and relationships with Jupiter being in your partnership sector. A significant number of single Taureans found true love that turned into an exclusive relationship or committed partnership. Taureans who are already committed enjoyed a major growth spurt in relationship dynamics with their mate.

As 2019 opens up, you don’t have to worry about your romantic luck running dry. As a matter of fact, it seems as if this is the year you get to see what grows between you and your partner from the seeds you planted together in 2018. Spoiler alert: the bounty looks delicious!

If you’re still single, there will be plenty of dating opportunities for you, and you can look forward to meeting people who stimulate you in ways you have never experienced before. One way or another, a great awakening will happen in your heart in 2019. You are truly blessed.”

Read the rest of Taurus’ 2019 love horoscope by Maria DeSimone here.

Gemini (May 21 – Jun. 20)

“Gemini, 2019 will go down in the history books of your love life as one of the most memorable, significant, life changing years ever. Yes, it’s that major! Why? It all has to do with Jupiter, the planet of luck, blessings, and abundance. Back in November 2018 Jupiter dipped into your 7th House of Relationships and Commitment for the first time in about 12 years. This year, Jupiter will remain in this part of your chart through December 2, essentially blowing up this area of your life.

Happily, this should prove to be a positive thing in terms of your romantic world. Are you completely single? Well if so, this is the year that you can meet a potential marriage partner or someone you will end up in a long-term, committed partnership with. Jupiter is opening up your capacity for and faith in relating. Since Jupiter is also in his home sign of Sagittarius, please know that there is even more potential for you to be hit by cupid’s arrow this year. Jupiter is strong in his own sign and will not be deterred from delivering the most magnificent blessings to all of us this year. Yours just happen to be in the love department.

You might wonder when you’ll meet this special someone over the course of 2019. Pay attention to the time frame between September 14-October 8 when Venus moves through your romance sector. This might be when it all begins.”

9 Ways to Attract Money Into Your Life, According to Feng Shui

$
0
0

If you want to find ways to invite a little (or a LOT) prosperity in your life this year, the Chinese art of feng shui can help you do just that. Developed more than 3,000 years ago, the art and science of feng shui was designed to help balance energies or “chi” (circulating life energy) within a space to help promote harmony, good health, and fortune. It can help people improve certain aspects of their life like love, health, and wealth.

So if one of your goals this new year is to attract money into your life, here are a couple of simple things you can do in your home to invite wealth in, according to feng shui experts.

Image: Tictail.com

9. Get a wealth vase

The feng shui wealth vase is basically a magnet for wealth. It is said to attract and strengthen the flow of wealth energy in your home. Wealth vases are traditionally made from Tibetan Buddhist temples, although there are many places where you can get one of these now. Just be sure to ideally choose an oriental-looking one. Although there are specific things you can do to make your own wealth vase, the general idea is to fill it with significant and prosperity-inviting things, as well as make it with your own clear intention to wish for wealth. You are also meant keep it out of sight. Read here for more specific instructions on how to make your own wealth vase.

8. Invest in a fish aquarium

Water, specifically aquariums, are auspicious in feng shui. They are said to bring a harmonious combination of wealth-attracting factors. Aside from being beautiful, when taken care of properly, aquariums are said to amplify energy in any space and therefore attract more abundance and wealth chi.

7. Check your home for broken things

Any broken thing inside the home is an energy vampire. It will suck the good energy out of your home! So if you want to create a good positive energy in your living space, be sure to start by scanning your home for any broken stuff and taking care of those either by replacing or fixing them. Anything related to plumbing, most especially, should be kept in good shape. Otherwise, you might experience a “financial clog”.

Image: TheSpruce.com

6. Get Chinese coins

Consider it a lucky charm, but other than for protection and good luck, you can also get those brass Chinese coins for attracting money. You can display these in your home by either hanging them on the wall, framing it, or by simply placing it on any surface. You can even just hide it out of plain sight, so long as you can still see it. Just make sure the yang side, the side with the four characters, are facing up. Another popular way to keep these coins is to carry them in your wallet or pocket, usually in three coins tied with a red ribbon.

5. Create a good working space

Your work desk, whether at home or at the office, should never be facing a wall as this creates a sort of block that puts a limit on creative flow and opportunities. If this is the case, re-arrange your desk so that it is facing space or a window with a view where you can feel a better flow of energy. Placing chairs in front of your desk for visitors is also recommended to help attract prosperity.

Image: Pinterest.com

4. Place citrine crystals on your windowsill

Citrine is the “stone of light and happiness.” It is also said to foster the energy of wealth and abundance, so therefore having one and placing it on your windowsill can help attract the flow of money energy into your home.

3. Decorate your home with plants

Plants are sensitive to energy, and are therefore indicative of the energy flowing in your home. When your plants are lush and blooming, it is a good sign that the energy in your home is alive and abundant. But if your plants are browning, sagging, or dying, it is a tell-tale sign that the energy in your home is low and stagnant. Keep plants around, and make sure they are well taken care of and thrive so that good energy is also invited into your home.

2. Create an abundant front door

Your front door is the first access into your home, so you want to make sure that it is in a good and bright spot. The idea is that you want money to flow effortlessly into your front door, so you want the path to your door unblocked. Make sure the space is welcoming and abundant, and that the door is working properly and doesn’t jam. You can even decorate it with plants or wreaths.

1. Add a fountain

Adding a fountain into your home is said to help attract prosperity into your life, as water fountains are a major symbol of wealth in feng shui. It is recommended to be placed at your home’s exterior, in the direction of the Southwest or East. Once you set up the fountain, make sure the water is flowing and put 27 coins in it to help activate the water energy, with the help of the metal element of the coins.

Although these feng shui tips are said to help attract money and abundance into your life, it is good to keep in mind that these are only meant to help clear energies in your home and give you support to achieve prosperity. At the end of the day, feng shui will not bring you wealth if you do not work for it. Good luck!

Have you tried any of these feng shui tips before? How did it work for you? Tell us in the comments!

7 signs you’re getting ghosted

$
0
0

Dating nowadays is stupid hard. While it’s so easy to connect with someone now, it’s just as easy to cut people out. Some of us have fallen victim to this unfortunate ease of being left behind. Some more than once, even!

If you think you have a ghostly visitor (not literally–I can’t help with the paranormal), here are some signs you gotta watch out for. NOTE: We’re aware that none of us are entitled to other people’s time and attention, it just hurts that someone we thought was into us turns out not to be and/or actively chose to stop putting in the effort because it was inconvenient. This is in the context of being ghosted in a a relationship that you thought was going somewhere.

7. Shorter and shorter answers

The two of you used to go from paragraphs-long conversations that would last over 11 hours to short, brief, one-worded answers from the other party. Even if you’re still trying to engage with them like you used to! You send nice messages about your day, what you’re doing, or something you both like and they just reply with “haha,” “oh,” or “cool.” And it’s frustrating.

See, sometimes it’s the slow-fade where conversations just get shorter and shorter. Other times, it’s just a sudden thing. I’m not sure which one’s more frustrating: Watching someone slowly lose interest in you or just one day looking forward to another nice conversation and suddenly getting nothing.

6. Flaker! And never re-schedules

They don’t commit to plans, they can’t even promise you anything within the week! It’s that or they just kind of say “yeah, maybe” to everything you propose. And it kind of sucks to feel like you’re the only one putting in the effort to see them or hang out–especially when they seemed just as into you at the beginning.

Worse is if they do agree to some plans and then just flake last minute. And when you say “next time,” they don’t follow through either. I’m very aware that I’m not entitled to their time and all, but if they give vague answers and are unclear, it’s just frustrating. Even when the both of you have talked about hanging out or setting aside time.

5. Doesn’t introduce you to their friends or inner circle

You know it’s a red flag when they refuse to introduce you to their friends. It’s as if they’re determined to keep you out of the loop of their life as much as possible so that, in case it gets messy, they don’t have to deal with their own friends detangling you from their lives. They want to keep you separate from their friendships so it doesn’t mess up any dynamic.

That’s probably a huge sign because they don’t want you to be part of your life in that regard. You already know it’s just a temporary thing to them.

4. Always online but never responds to you

You can see them tweeting, posting pics on IG, even haha-reacting their friends’ posts, but they take 100 years to respond to you when, back then, they responded to you so quickly. It seems like them being super into you only lasted a few weeks and they stopped wanting to put in the effort. Which would be fine–because we’re not entitled to their time–but they still leave you hanging with half-plans or emotional bait.

Just as you’re about to move on, they say something sweet and keep you hooked so you don’t let go and they’re gonna go back to ignoring you and tweeting. Ugh!

3. They never contribute to the conversation anymore

They hardly ever reply with substance and it’s reaaallyyyy pissing you off. If anything, they just try to kill the conversation as fast as possible. And despite your best efforts and your earnest desire to talk like you used to, they’re opting out. They simply react or even just say “haha” or “ok.” And it hurts.

2. They hate being confronted

If you even try to bring up the fact that they’re treating you kind of badly, they either try to downplay it or just don’t acknowledge it at all. Which, to a degree, is pretty disrespectful. And if they respond with complete silence, that can even be emotionally cruel. Especially when they tell you they’re interested in you, want to be there for you, and all those other cliches.

Bringing up their behavior to them is like shedding light on their crappy communication habits. And they don’t wanna be self-reflexive about how they leave people hanging. So you immediately become the bad guy if you make them aware of their own frustrating actions.

1. They can’t keep promises

They might be super sweet at first but a big red flag is when they can’t make promises. They can say stuff like they care about you or you’re special or anything like that but when it comes to concrete promises, plans, or things they swear to do for you, they can’t keep them. All talk no action–that’s always a good indicator.

They’re probably really not interested in anything, just momentarily inflating their egos by keeping you interested in them for a bit and then running off the minute they have to be a little more accountable for things. Bye!

Remember: Even if someone ghosts you, it doesn’t mean you, as a person, are hard to love. It has nothing to do with your worth. It’s them choosing to waste your time and make you feel like you’re inconvenient. You’re really not. Hold your head up high and treat people right! Be kind!

10 Relatable Truths If You Ever Lived In A College Dorm

Words by Hannah Angelique Bacani

Ahh, college. The sweet sound of independence mashed with the fast-paced tune of adult-ing. Studying in college is already a pain, no matter how much you love your degree program, what with the number of sleepless nights and the cups of coffee flowing in your bloodstream. But if you’ve ever had to move out the comforts of your home and live in a dorm for college, you know the struggle doesn’t end in the piled up requirements and deadlines. Because while living on your own gives you a sense of independence and control over your time, sometimes, it just adds to the stress.

Here are ten things you could relate to if you ever lived in a college dorm.

10. Locked out? Call thy roommate.

First rule of living in the dorm: NEVER FORGET YOUR KEYS! Unless you have the best roommate ever that you can call to rescue you.

9. The Horrors of Communal Bathrooms

Some dormers are lucky to have bathrooms in every room. Others, not so much. And if you ever had to live in a dorm with bathrooms you have to share with a million other people in your floor, OH MY HEART GOES TO YOU for all the clogged sinks, unflushed toilets, and other unspeakable things you’ve had to brave.

8. In cleanliness and in mess, ’til the dorm contract do us part

Speaking of disgusting things, sharing a space with other people means getting to know your roommates to the core–filthy habits and all. From having an unmade bed to leaving unwashed dishes in the sink for a week, some roommates can be total slobs, but sometimes you love them enough to stay. Other times, you just can’t wait to leave or find a new roomie. Yikes.

7. Things can get pretty trashy.

I swear, nobody takes out the trash. It could pile up with scratch papers and takeout boxes but no one will ever take it out. Unless your roommate’s mom comes to visit. And I bet you can count in one hand the number of times you swept the floor for the whole semester.

6. Stairway to hell

Moving in your stuff to your dorm room is one thing. But moving them into the second/third/fourth floor of your dorm is just plain torture. And while living on the upper floors could be a great exercise, it’s a major disadvantage when you’re running late or when you forgot something.

5. Double deck struggles

The first thing you’d probably miss when you live in the dorms is your own comfy bed. Most dorms have small, cramped double deck beds. The lower bunk is too low you hit your head on the frame when you sit up. And taking the top bunk means you can only sleep on one side because you’ll fall face first when you toss and turn. So pick your poison. (Well, you’re in college. You’ll barely sleep anyway.)

4. Wake me up when this sem ends

Your roommates are not only our walking spare key but also your living and breathing wake up alarm who are ready to slap you in the face to keep you awake during an all-nighter. But when you ask them to wake you up and you don’t, IT’S ON YOU! It’s not their fault you’re a sleepyhead.

3. Wake me up with my roommate’s alarm

Picture this: In that one rare occasion that you could actually, finally get some sleep, your roommate’s deafening alarm goes off at 4 AM. And doesn’t stop because they’re not waking up. And you can’t turn it off yourself. And you try to go back to sleep but you can’t because it’s ringing in your ears. So you just give up sleeping for yet another night and go to class sleepless. Way to go, you.

2. Instant noodles is life

Cheap. Tasty. Cheap. Easy to cook. Cheap. Bad for your health. Have I mentioned cheap? That’s instant noodles for you. Along with canned goods and everything else instant. Not exactly the best option for every meal, but you’re just a broke college student tryna survive a semester. You’ll live.

1. No place like dorm. I mean, home.

Living in the dorms can be the best times of your life, being independent and all that. But other times, you just can’t wait to come back home and taste home cooked meals again and sleep at the comforts of your own bed. No place like it, indeed.

LOOK: NAIA’s Baggage Carousel Now Has a CCTV Feed!

A photo circulating around Facebook shows newly installed CCTV feeds stationed around baggage carousels in NAIA 2. The feed televises the transfer of luggage from the cars onto the conveyor belt. This is a great installation because one of the most nerve-wracking parts about traveling is arriving back in NAIA and waiting for your luggage to come out.

This is cool. The baggage carousel in NAIA Terminal 2 has a CCTV feed showing how the bags are being loaded.Maybe to…

Posted by Paolo Go on Thursday, January 3, 2019

Even if you know that logically, there is most likely nothing wrong with your luggage; you’re still anxious for it to come out of the conveyor belt. Then, loading the luggage onto the belt takes some time in itself, and you’re just wondering if your bag sustained any damage, or if the fragile items survived the trip. After all, several videos have circulated in the past showing luggage just being thrown around like they were nothing important.

Now, at least a little bit of that anxiety can be soothed. According to comments on the post, there is a CCTV feed for every baggage claim station. Similar feeds are also operational in NAIA Terminal 1 and 3. The footage is also believed be live and not pre-recorded or looped, like others in the comments challenge it to be.

LOOK: Single-use plastics might soon be banned in the Philippines

House Bill No. 8692, or the “Ban on Single-use Plastic Products” was recently filed at the House of Representatives at the start of January. It calls for a total ban on single-use plastics, as well as a phase-out plan for plastics already in use. The bill still has to go through the approval process by Congress, but it has already gained traction.

There is a lot of hope that the bill could make a significant impact on the waste produced in the Philippines. An explanatory note of the bill describes it as: “seeking to ban single-use products and to encourage manufacturers and consumers to use more sustainable and environmental-friendly products.”

Aside from banning establishments like restaurants and retail stores from using plastic, the bill also disallows the manufacturing, importing and selling of single-use plastics. These plastics products would include straws, cups, sachets, shopping bags, food containers, and more. The ban would take full effect one year after the bill is passed.

Additional provisions to the bill include creating local recycling centers and establishing awareness programs for recycling. It also calls for the “collection, recycling, and proper disposal by the manufacturers of single-use plastic products already in circulation.”

The trend of banning plastic has already taken off globally, with countries like New Zealand and institutions like the European Union making similar commitments. It also comes on the heels of studies by the United Nations stating that a plastic ban is one of the most effective combatants to pollution.

One of the most important nights for a teenager is their debut. These parties are a celebration and a welcome to adulthood, so many debutantes hope to create the event of their dreams. The same could be said for Mavy and Cassy Legaspi, the twin children of Carmina Villaroel and Zoren Legaspi, who celebrated their 18th birthdays with an Oscars-themed affair!

Gideon Hermosa styled the event and draped it with red elements, which reminds us of the Oscars red carpet. Of course, Mavy and Cassy were the best dressed, with Mavy rocking a navy and gray suit and Cassy wearing a gold gown, both designed by Francis Libiran.

According to Pep, the theme was Mavy’s idea and the twins were inspired by their parents’ wedding.

In the clips, Efron found a crab in their house and he proceeded to show it to everyone. Dwyer didn’t seem to be pleased to see it.

After walking the Victoria’s Secret runway show, Merritt moved to an apartment in Tribeca, a hip neighborhood in New York City home to Taylor Swift, Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Timberlake, Meg Ryan, and Beyonce and Jay Z, and more.

In November last year, the National Planetarium was closed for repairs after reopening in mid-2017. We have great news: it has been reopened again and you can check out the galactic awesomeness on display!

The news was announced by the National Museum of the Philippines Facebook page. According to them, “Please join us on our journey to the wonders of our Ethno astronomy, learning how planets and stars have guided us in sea navigation, agriculture, fishing and the right timing of celebrating life.”

As with all the national museums in the country, entrance to the National Planetarium is free but they charge for planetarium shows (Php 50.00 for regular viewers, Php 30.00 for students with ID, and Php 40.00 for senior citizens and PWD). They have three shows available:  “A Planet for Goldilocks,” “Journey to a Billion Suns” and “Hayabusa: Back to the Earth.”

The planetarium is home to the full-dome Planetarium projector, which is reportedly the first in Asia. It is open 10 am to 5 pm (last admission 4:30 pm), Tuesday to Sunday. It is located at Dr. Jose P. Rizal Park, Padre Burgos Ave, Ermita, Manila, Metro Manila.

I made amin to my crush.. well, sort of

$

Words by Matthew Mendiola

GIFS from various Harry Potter films

I’ve always been enthralled by Paulo Coehlo’s The Alchemist, the story of how a shepherd boy travels long and far to the Pyramids of Giza in search of treasure, only to find in his quest a much more valuable treasure–Fatima, the love of his life. It’s a tale I wish could be real. Sometimes, I would daydream about being the shepherd boy, about finding the oasis in the midst of this desert.

As far as I could remember, my love life was zero, and I was fine keeping it that way. “Acads first” became my go-to excuse to cover up my fear of approaching any of the girls I’ve ever crushed on. Every time someone would ask me why I’m still single, I’d say matter-of-factly that I just haven’t found the one. After all, that shepherd boy found love in the least likely of places, so maybe I was yet to find my “soulmate” someday somewhere. I tried convincing myself that it’s right to wait, but then, there’s that nagging thought at the back of my mind–what if I keep waiting?

And then, on my first day of class, I saw Ana sitting just a couple of rows away from me.

I suddenly remembered my Theo classes where we talked about how love is a choice, not a feeling. Granted that what I felt at the moment wasn’t love per se, I couldn’t help feeling the flutter of butterflies in my stomach. Call it cathexis… call it anything other than love, but that gut-wrenching feeling was definitely real. The hero of The Alchemist found out that he loved Fatima without even knowing it. Could it be possible to love someone you don’t know?

It wasn’t as if we were total strangers. I knew Ana from that org we were both a part of. She was kind and unassuming, and there was definitely something captivating about her charm. We had some common friends, but we only knew each other as acquaintances. All I could notice was how much prettier she looked now.

My friend Beyonce (not the singer) knew about my crush, and she challenged me to say something to my crush before the sem ended. Beyonce was my love guru, and being one of the few girls I felt comfortable being myself with, I’d often ask her for advice. Always, Beyonce would tell me just to be myself and be honest about how I feel. And most importantly, she told me that I had to talk to her face-to-face.

Being my typical torpe self, I never bothered to try talking to Ana, beyond the occasional “hi, hello” whenever I’d see her in class or cross paths with her in the hallway. Sometimes, when she would greet me first, I’d just smile awkwardly and garble up some unintelligible greeting. I let an entire semester pass without trying to get closer to her. At one point, we even became groupmates, but still, I didn’t say anything. I really hated being an introvert and a hopeless romantic.

Whenever Beyonce would ask me for updates on my non-existent love life, I’d just tell her that I’m waiting for the right opportunity. Waiting, like always.

There’s a line from The Alchemist that goes, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” The first time I read this, I thought that it was a rather naive statement. The universe won’t just hand you what you want on a silver platter–that much I knew. But it got me thinking. What if all those missed opportunities I could have said something to Ana was the universe’s way of telling me to do something?

The sem ended early for me, and on my last day of school, I saw Ana. I figured it could also be her last day of school as well, and it was likely the only chance I had left to talk to her. Was this it? Was this the sign the universe was sending me?

I mustered up the courage to approach Ana. I started with my usual awkward hi, and to my relief, she was the one who started the conversation. She asked me how I’ve been holding up the past sem. And like a miracle, I felt really light talking to her, and we shared a few laughs as we talked about all the papers and the photo finish deadlines we survived. Beyonce told me to be myself and be honest about how I felt. This was it. I said to my crush, “Ana, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but I just needed to let you know: I think you’re really beautiful.”

That was when both of us became silent. Ana blushed, and those few awkward seconds made me sweat profusely. Immediately, I changed the topic and asked her if she still had any pending requirements left for school. She said that all she had was one last exam. I wished Ana good luck and gave some words of encouragement, and after an awkward bye, we parted ways.

That night, I couldn’t stop replaying the scene in my head. I felt relieved to have gotten it off my chest. Now, I won’t be wondering about the what-ifs. But then I thought about the what-ifs. What if she liked me too? Conversely, what if… she didn’t?

My next reaction was to check the last message I sent Ana. We were groupmates for a class project once, and our only exchanges were solely school-related. The last message I sent her was a thank you, and that was a couple of months ago.

I thought that if Ana thought me weird, our conversation today might be our last one… the exchange of messages we had would be the last Messenger chat we’d have.

I decided not to think about it too much anymore. Besides, what chances did I have with my crush? No one has ever had a crush on me anyway… or so I thought. As I was scrolling through my FaceBook feed, Liz, a friend of mine, posted a cheeky status update, promising to send a personal message for every comment, wherein she would “make amin” a secret of hers. I commented on her post, expecting Liz to send me some unpopular opinion she had about anything pop culture, but instead, I got surprised by her message.

She told me that she found me cute. It was the first time anyone ever told me that. She apologized about having had a crush on me before, hoping that her confession didn’t make things between us weird.

At first, I didn’t respond to her message right away. I kind of freaked out. It flattered me to find out that someone actually liked me, but at the same time, I didn’t want my friendship with Liz to change. I liked her as a friend.

After a minute of thinking about what to type, I replied back with “Really? Haha cool… no worries :))”. Liz replied back with “thanks and sorry” again, and I didn’t get what she had to feel sorry for. It made me feel bad that Liz was feeling guilty, so I tried to make our chat less awkward. I teased that maybe she found me less cute when she found out that I wasn’t a fan of a certain show she liked. We were back to our usual cheeky messages, and we had a really fun chat afterward. All that mattered to me was that we were still friends. In fact, because of Liz’s amin, Liz and I just became even closer.

A few days after I told Ana I found her beautiful, I got a friend request… from her. I was so ecstatic. Perhaps that day wasn’t the last time we’d talk to each other. Just maybe… Ana could like me too. Then, I thought about this in relation to how I felt about Liz’s amin. At first, I might have been taken aback, but I didn’t think Liz weird because of it. Perhaps, this was what Ana felt as well when I sort of made amin to her.

If there’s any lesson to learn from my experience, it’s probably that you’ll never know unless you try. Maybe it will work out, and maybe it won’t. But hey, that’s life, and that’s okay. Imagine what the world would be like if we all just collapsed these imaginary boundaries we construct, and were more honest with how we feel about others. Maybe, making amin to your crush can make this world a better place.

Have you ever confessed to your crush? Let us know!
