The torpe is a classic Filipino trope of a man who’s too shy to approach the girl of his dreams and make a move. It’s all too common to hear of stories of unrequited love, unrequited because they are too afraid to “risk the friendship.” We’re not sure about the odds, but we believe it is possible that your crush will like you back.
Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda shares how he believes making a move can have big payoffs. On his Facebook page, he says:
Guys, friend ko nga pala, si Neri!
Patay na patay ako sa kanya. Sobrang bait, sobrang simple, at sobrang ganda.
Friends kami pero ayoko ng “friends” lang. Di ako papayag na “tropa” lang kami.
(Meet my friend, Neri!
I’m so in love with her. She’s super nice, super simple, and super beautiful.
We’re friends, but I’m not happy with being “just friends.” I’m not going to allow for us to be “just friends.”)
Miranda mentions what would have happened if he didn’t make a move:
Ano ko, tanga? Hindi ako manliligaw kasi baka “masira” ang friendship namin?! Eh paano kung ligawan sya ng iba tapos dun sya mapunta? Di ako papayag, no!
Gusto ko ako lang ang hahalik sa lips nya. Gusto ko kapag hinawakan ko yung kamay nya, may kilig at malisya. Gusto ko ako ang lalakeng mamahalin nya ng todo, and hindi lang “as a friend”. Friendzone mo mukha mo.
Gagawa ako ng paraan para maging girlfriend ko sya at mahalin nya ako ng sobra sobra.
(What am I? Stupid? I’m not going to profess my love because it might “ruin” our friendship? What if someone made a move and she ends up with that guy? I”m not going to allow that!
I want to be the only one to kiss her lips. Whenever I hold her hand, I want there to be a spark. I want to be the only man who will completely love her, and not as “just a friend.” Friendzone your face.
I am going to do everything so that she can be my girlfriend and that she’ll love me.)
Miranda made the move. What happened next?
Ayun… ang ending kinasal kami.
(In the end… we got married.)
